MongoDB CEO Leaves for Meta, Former Leader Returns Amid Stock Drop

MongoDB’s CEO, Chirantan “CJ” Desai, has stepped down suddenly to join Meta Platforms in a new senior role. Meta just launched a big new business called Meta Enterprise Platform, aiming to help companies use its AI technology. Desai will lead this effort, reporting directly to Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
This move caught many by surprise. Desai had only been MongoDB’s CEO since November last year, taking over from Dev Ittycheria. Now, Ittycheria is back as interim CEO to steady the company during the transition. He led MongoDB for over a decade before retiring recently, and the board trusts him to guide the company until they find a new permanent leader.
On the day the news broke, MongoDB’s shares fell sharply—down about 17% by market close. Investors seem uneasy about the sudden leadership change despite MongoDB reaffirming its financial outlook for the year. The company emphasised that its business remains strong and that it will continue focusing on growth and innovation.
Meta’s new enterprise platform is more than just a product update. It’s designed as a major new business branch to package Meta’s advanced AI tools for other companies to use. The platform includes components like the Muse agent and Meta Business Agent, which aim to help businesses grow and operate more efficiently with AI.
Desai brings a strong background in cloud software and AI, having held senior roles at MongoDB, Cloudflare, and ServiceNow. Meta hopes his experience will help them expand their AI offerings in the corporate world.
For MongoDB, this is a quick reversal at the top just months after Desai took charge. The company is now focused on keeping its momentum with Ittycheria back at the helm, while searching for a new CEO. Meanwhile, Meta is betting big on AI as a central part of its future business strategy, starting with this new platform led by Desai.
