Meta Removes Satirical Video Criticising Its AI Glasses

Dutch program maker Roel Maalderink and digital rights group Bits of Freedom made a satirical video about Meta’s AI glasses. In the video, Maalderink wore the glasses and approached Meta employees outside the company’s Amsterdam office, asking what they thought of the product while filming them.

Meta removed the video from Instagram, saying it violated the platform’s rules against bullying and harassment. The company did not specify which parts of the video broke the rules, and it did not provide further details about the removal.

Bits of Freedom said the faces of the Meta employees in the video were blurred to protect their identities. Before being taken down, the video reportedly gained around 500,000 views across social media, though this number has not been independently confirmed.

Copies of the video remain available on other platforms, including Bits of Freedom’s website and YouTube. There are mixed reports about whether the video was still on Facebook at the time of reporting.

Maalderink said he has made satirical videos on many topics for about 10 years, but this is the first time one of his videos was removed. He noted that the video was well received by viewers before the removal.

The AI glasses from Meta have been controversial for privacy reasons. They include a small camera and microphone to record audio and video, and a white blinking light signals when recording is happening. Meta says covering or disabling this light automatically turns off the camera.

Privacy groups have raised concerns about people being recorded without their knowledge, especially as the glasses look like normal eyewear. Calls have been made for stricter rules or bans on such devices to protect public privacy.

This incident highlights ongoing debates about how large tech companies manage content related to their products, especially when it involves criticism or satire. Meta’s removal of the video raises questions about where the line is drawn between enforcing rules on harassment and allowing free discussion about its technology.
