Meta Launches Waddle World, an AI-Enhanced Virtual Pet App in the Philippines

Meta Platforms, Inc. has launched Waddle World, an AI-powered virtual pet app currently available exclusively in the Philippines for iOS and Android users. This new app combines nostalgic virtual pet gameplay with artificial intelligence to offer users a unique journaling and companionship experience designed for adults aged 18 and over.
In Waddle World, users begin by hatching a pixelated pet in a cozy 16-bit world. Unlike traditional virtual pet games, this pet listens to or reads users’ daily stories, converting them into illustrated journal entries written in the pet’s own voice. Each entry is accompanied by hand-drawn doodles, creating a personalised diary that reflects the user’s mood and routines over time.
The app encourages interaction through simple mini-games such as stacking groceries on the pet’s head, catching falling stars while avoiding bombs, and unscrambling letters to form words. Points earned from these games can be used to buy food, toys, and outfits to care for the pet, reinforcing the nurturing aspect of the experience. Notably, Waddle World avoids common engagement pressures found in many apps by excluding streaks, leaderboards, or scorekeeping, positioning itself as a low-stress digital escape that users can visit at their convenience.
To enrich the connection between user and pet, the app sends weekly emails featuring postcards that summarise what the pet has learned about the user. It also prompts users with daily questions like “What kind of weather are you today?” to help the pet better understand their emotional state and respond accordingly.
Meta explicitly states that Waddle World is neither a chatbot, assistant, nor productivity tool. Instead, it is described as a digital pet with personality, designed to be a warm and approachable companion rather than a complex AI agent. This approach aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to make AI more accessible and friendly, potentially complementing other AI initiatives such as the Muse character and the Muse Charm device, a small gadget intended to keep the AI companion close to users.
The app’s launch in the Philippines appears to be a limited regional test, with no official announcements regarding a wider rollout or availability in other markets. The app was first listed in late September 2026, and user reviews from the Philippines have praised its charming AI interactions and relaxing gameplay, while also suggesting enhancements like more mini-games and improved AI responsiveness.
Privacy is addressed through the app’s data policies, which indicate that Waddle World collects some personal data including location and app activity, and may share information with third parties. However, data is encrypted in transit, and users can request deletion of their data. An inconsistency exists in the app’s age rating: while the store description specifies that users must be 18 or older, the Google Play rating shows “3+,” a discrepancy that has not been explained.
Waddle World represents a fresh fusion of virtual pet care and AI-assisted journaling, offering a comforting and low-pressure digital space for self-reflection through a virtual friend. Whether Meta will expand the app beyond the Philippines remains uncertain as the company continues to explore innovative ways to integrate AI into everyday user experiences.
