Whereas “regular” HRV is meant to be a longitudinal look at your overall stress and cardiovascular health, Apple uses recovery HRV as a gauge of your daily, short-term strain. (And because this is enabled by the new array, it does mean readiness requires at least a Series 12 or Ultra 4. )It takes a hot minute to generate the score — seven nights of sleep in which you get at least four hours of rest.
On the surface, the Apple Watch Series 12 doesn’t appear to be a major upgrade over last year’s release and, in many ways, it isn’t. The watchOS 27 update, first announced at WWDC in June and finally available to consumers, gives the Apple Watch a cleaner, streamlined interface that positions Siri AI at the center of the user experience. The Series 12 looks nearly identical to its predecessors, but Apple highlights it as its thinnest Apple Watch yet.
I didn’t notice a difference during everyday wear, but the Apple Watch Series remains one of the most comfortable smartwatches I’ve tested. Photograph: Boutayna ChokraneThe Series 12 ships with watchOS 27, but most of the software changes will also arrive on compatible older Apple Watches.
The wider picture
Video: Boutayna ChokraneReadiness has at last arrived for anyone who has been anticipating a unified recovery score from Apple. That said, Readiness is useful as a prompt to pay attention to your body, and I’m glad Apple finally has one. It’s a thoughtful update, and that makes the Series 12 the best Apple Watch yet. TechGadgetsScienceThe Apple Watch Series 12 is the start of a new wearable eraA surprisingly consequential update for the world’s most popular smartwatch.
You wouldn’t know that the Apple Watch Series 12 is a big deal just by looking at it. New hardwareTwo key hardware updates separate the Series 12 (and the Ultra 4) from previous Apple Watches. Together, these hardware upgrades enable a host of new software features, including more frequent heart rate sampling, a new readiness score, and a brave new world of Audio Intelligence, which is what Apple is calling its upcoming suite of AI-powered ambient listening features.
I’ll continue testing the Series 12 and Ultra 4 against other devices and across activity types, but I’m pretty confident the Apple Watch is now in line with many other popular wearables.
What has been reported
The big update ready today is Apple’s take on a readiness score. Apple assesses “readiness” through a combination of overnight, daytime, and weekly metrics like activity, sleep score, and overnight vitals encompassing resting heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and a new metric called recovery heart rate variability (HRV). Agree to Continue: Apple Watch Series 12Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads.

After wearing it day and night for a week, I found that better health tracking, faster charging, and a simpler interface make Apple’s latest smartwatch noticeably easier to live with. But after a week of wearing it day and night, I noticed that the Series 12 feels more intuitive, putting fewer steps between me and the information I need from my everyday smartwatch.
Plus, in a fun return, the Series 12 also comes in ceramic, a premium finish Apple discontinued in 2020.
What happens next
If you already have the Series 11, Audio Intelligence probably isn’t going to be enough to justify replacing a watch that’s already capable of most of the same functions. Apple first offered a ceramic option with the Series 2 in 2016, and it was discontinued in 2020. It complements most of my wardrobe and gives the watch a more cosmopolitan look than some of Apple’s sportier colorways. Apple is also making the watch easier to navigate with one hand, adding a single-tap gesture to Apple’s existing double-tap and wrist-flick controls.
The more intriguing additions are Siri Recap and Live Rewind, which push the Apple Watch into murky waters by using its microphone to capture and process audio. Apple has refined the everyday experience, added health metrics people actually want, and resisted the temptation to bury the watch under a pile of new features. It has the same design, buttons, sizes, and sensor types as generations of Apple Watches before it.
