Tottenham’s First Win at Stamford Bridge in Nearly a Decade Lifts Them to 12th Place

Tottenham Hotspur pulled off a rare and much-needed victory on Saturday, beating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. This win marked their first success at Chelsea’s home ground since the 2017-18 season and only their second there in 34 years. It also lifted Spurs to 12th place in the Premier League, their highest league position since early January.

The match was a tough one for Chelsea, who struggled to find their rhythm in heavy rain. Tottenham dominated much of the game, holding around 70% possession in the first half. Despite the pressure, neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes.

The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders accidentally punched a corner kick into his own net. This own goal gave Spurs the lead and swung momentum firmly in their favour.

Just a few minutes later, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The dismissal followed a heated moment when Palmer barged into Tottenham’s Mateus Fernandes, who had just fouled him. Palmer’s loss of composure was costly, and Chelsea had to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men.

Tottenham sealed the win in the 87th minute with a stunning solo goal from Mathys Tel. Starting from inside his own half, Tel weaved past defenders and fired a precise shot into the bottom corner of the net. The goal crowned a strong performance from Spurs and confirmed their second consecutive league win after beating Coventry City 3-1 just five days earlier.

These back-to-back victories come after a difficult start to the season for Tottenham, who had failed to win in their first six league matches with three draws and three losses. The recent wins have given the team a much-needed confidence boost and a chance to climb away from the relegation zone.

Tottenham’s coach, Roberto De Zerbi, praised his players for their attitude and unity, saying they are gradually building a team spirit and style that can compete in the Premier League. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining this mentality for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s manager Xabi Alonso admitted his team was below their best and acknowledged the need for more maturity and emotional control, especially after Palmer’s red card. Alonso’s side remains fourth in the table but will need to address defensive lapses and discipline if they want to keep challenging near the top.

James Maddison, Tottenham’s key midfielder, was forced off early in the second half with an injury, but the team managed to hold their lead despite this setback. The injury’s full extent has not been confirmed.

Tottenham’s revival this season follows a near-relegation scare last year, when they finished 17th on the final day of the Premier League. The summer transfer window brought new signings like Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, who are helping De Zerbi reshape the squad and build a more competitive team.

With this recent form, Spurs fans have reason to hope their team can climb further up the table and avoid another relegation battle. However, it is still early in the season, and consistency will be key as the challenges continue.
