Saracens Director Brendan Venter Skips Media Duties Again Amid Role Confusion

Saracens’ director of rugby, Brendan Venter, has once again missed a pre-match media conference ahead of the team’s Gallagher Premiership game against Sale Sharks. Instead, head coach Joe Shaw spoke to the press, avoiding any questions about Venter’s absence or future media commitments.
Venter’s absence follows earlier missed media duties, including the Premiership Rugby pre-season launch and a media session before Saracens’ season opener, a tight 40-38 win at Leicester Tigers on September 27. These no-shows have reportedly led to fines against the club, with figures around £5,000 mentioned, though official confirmation is lacking.
The situation is complicated by reports that Saracens have asked Premiership Rugby to allow Joe Shaw to act as their designated media representative. Some media outlets also claim Venter has changed his job title to “head of rugby culture and wine consultant” in an effort to avoid media obligations. However, Saracens and Premiership Rugby have not confirmed this change, and the club’s official website still lists Venter as director of rugby.
Venter has a history of tense relations with the media, including fines from previous comments. He has said his media absence is not personal and even invited rugby journalists to a wine-tasting event at Saracens’ stadium as a more informal setting for discussion.
Joe Shaw, who has been handling media duties in Venter’s place, declined to comment on when or if Venter will return to traditional media responsibilities, focusing instead on rugby matters.
The ongoing uncertainty leaves Saracens fans and observers waiting for clarity on Venter’s role and media presence as the club moves through the new season.
