Kawhi Leonard Returns to Raptors, Ready to Focus on Basketball After Clippers Controversy

Kawhi Leonard is back with the Toronto Raptors, determined to leave behind the troubles that marked his final time with the Los Angeles Clippers. Speaking at Toronto’s media day on September 28, Leonard made it clear he wants to focus on basketball and his role with the Raptors.

The Raptors traded for Leonard earlier this month, sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and several future draft picks to the Clippers. This deal reunites Leonard with the team where he won the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2019 and earned Finals MVP honours. Leonard left Toronto in free agency soon after that title run.

His return comes after a difficult summer. The NBA found that the Clippers had broken salary cap rules by arranging off-court income opportunities for Leonard through business deals with companies connected to the team. Leonard himself was fined $700,000 for his part in these violations. The Clippers faced severe penalties, including losing five first-round draft picks, a $30 million fine, and suspensions for key executives including owner Steve Ballmer.

Despite the controversy, Raptors general manager Bobby Webster said the team did its homework and felt confident moving forward with the trade and Leonard’s contract extension. Webster stressed that the Raptors are focused on the future, not dwelling on past successes or problems.

Leonard acknowledged the distraction the investigation caused and said it had kept him from fully connecting with his new teammates during training camp. But he’s eager to move on and help the Raptors compete. Leonard spoke about his fondness for Toronto, noting that his son was born there and has been asking to come back. He hopes to give Raptors fans another memorable season.

The Raptors are entering the new season with a strong core including Leonard, Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Jakob Poeltl. Leonard’s presence is expected to boost their defence and provide a reliable scoring option late in games. As training camp begins, Leonard’s focus is clear: basketball and winning with Toronto.
