SeaWorld Orlando’s Halloween Event Brings Dark Romance to Life

This year, SeaWorld Orlando’s Howl-O-Scream Halloween event opened on September 11 and runs on select nights until October 31. Unlike the usual daytime park visits, this is a separate, ticketed event meant for mature audiences.

One of the standout new features is a scare zone called “Just One More Chapter.” It’s inspired by the popular dark romance genre—stories that mix love with danger and obsession. The zone is set in a gothic garden filled with masked men who play the role of brooding, mysterious characters. These performers interact with guests, creating an immersive experience that’s more about mood and atmosphere than traditional scares.

The idea came from SeaWorld’s art director, Jessie Kinsey, who noticed the rise of dark romance stories on TikTok. She designed the zone around themes of “toxic obsession” and “cursed romance,” complete with a large open book set piece and the tagline “Good Girls Go for the Bad Boys.” The actors wear masks and dark clothing, embodying the morally complex antiheroes typical of these stories.

Visitors and social media users have reacted strongly to the zone, with some finding it fun and a little sexy, while others have mixed feelings about mixing romance and horror. SeaWorld says actor safety is a priority, with training and security in place to handle any issues.

Alongside “Just One More Chapter,” the event includes five haunted houses, several other scare zones, themed bars, live shows, and select rides operating after dark. One of the new haunted houses is based on the ’90s horror movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” adding a classic slasher element to the lineup.

SeaWorld reports that Howl-O-Scream is seeing its strongest month in six years, though exact attendance or sales figures have not been published. Tickets for the event start around $48 for a single night, separate from regular park admission.
