Two Released After Suspicious Fire Evacuates Hundreds at Folkestone Hotel

Two people were arrested and later released as investigations continue into a major fire that broke out early on Saturday at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone, Kent. The blaze, believed to have started in the hotel’s basement, prompted the evacuation of approximately 280 guests and staff, as well as the relocation of around 90 residents from a nearby building due to safety concerns.
The fire was first reported at around 1:06am, with emergency services deploying a significant response involving 26 fire engines and specialist units. Firefighters worked through the night to control the flames and extinguish hotspots, with the incident officially declared under control by the following day. No fire-related injuries have been confirmed by official sources.
Following the fire, safety inspectors raised concerns that the intensity of the blaze may have compromised the structural integrity of the adjacent Pavilion Court residential building. This led Folkestone & Hythe District Council to arrange the temporary relocation of its occupants to alternative accommodation, including hotels and stays with family or friends. The council has been actively supporting affected residents and coordinating welfare services alongside local emergency teams.
Kent Police arrested a 38-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman in connection with the incident. Both individuals were released pending further enquiries, and no charges have been announced. The police and fire service are treating the fire as suspicious and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage from the area between late Friday night and early Saturday morning to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Road closures remain in place around the hotel as investigative work continues. Britannia Hotels, the operator of the Grand Burstin, has stated its full cooperation with authorities and is assisting guests affected by the fire. Meanwhile, a welfare centre was established to support evacuees, with local organisations such as The Salvation Army providing additional aid.
The full cause of the fire remains undetermined, and the future of the hotel is subject to ongoing structural assessments. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the arrested individuals or the extent of the damage to the property. The situation remains under close monitoring as emergency services and local officials work to ensure safety and support for those impacted.
