Kimi Antonelli Claims Pole Position at United States Grand Prix, Eyes Historic First F1 Title

Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the 2026 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, setting the stage for a potential early crowning as Formula 1 world champion. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver posted a fastest qualifying time of 1:34.035, edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the front row with a strong third-place qualifying effort.
This marks Antonelli’s seventh pole position of the 2026 season, underscoring his dominance as he leads the drivers’ championship by a significant margin. Heading into the race, Antonelli holds 340 points, a 102-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell and 111 points ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. With the United States Grand Prix being the 18th round of the season, only five races remain — Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.
The championship could be decided this weekend if Antonelli wins the race and the results of his closest rivals fall in his favour. Specifically, Antonelli would clinch the title if he wins and Russell finishes ninth or lower, while Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. Such an outcome would give Antonelli an insurmountable lead in the points standings with five races still to run, making him the youngest ever Formula 1 world champion if he seals the title.
Qualifying was held under challenging conditions, with gusty and unpredictable winds impacting several drivers’ attempts to improve their times. Antonelli set his pole-winning lap on his first run in the final qualifying session (Q3), while Verstappen and Hadjar were unable to better their initial times on subsequent attempts. This left Antonelli comfortably on top despite the difficult conditions.
Ferrari entered the weekend as favourites after topping all three practice sessions, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton showing strong pace. However, neither driver could convert this speed into a front-row starting position during qualifying. Leclerc qualified fourth, followed by Hamilton in fifth, while Mercedes’ George Russell took sixth place. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified seventh, with teammate Lando Norris originally sixth but demoted to eighth after his final lap was deleted for exceeding track limits.
Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad qualified ninth but is set to drop five places on the grid due to a penalty for an engine component change. This penalty promotes teammate Liam Lawson to start from ninth position on race day.
The qualifying results place Antonelli in a prime position to control the race from the front. Verstappen, rather than Ferrari, emerges as his immediate front-row rival, while Russell and Hamilton will need strong finishes to keep their championship hopes alive. The pressure is now on Antonelli to convert this pole position into a race victory to potentially secure the title.
Antonelli’s performance this season has been remarkable, with eight Grand Prix wins and six additional podium finishes across 17 rounds. His dominance has been built on consistent pace and the strength of the Mercedes car, particularly following an upgrade package that has helped him maintain an edge over his rivals.
The United States Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2026, with qualifying having taken place on Saturday, October 24. The race promises to be a high-stakes event with Antonelli on the brink of making F1 history by becoming the youngest world champion ever, accomplishing this feat in just his second season.
