MongoDB CEO CJ Desai Steps Down, Former CEO Dev Ittycheria Returns as Interim Leader

MongoDB has announced that Chirantan “CJ” Desai has stepped down as its president and CEO, effective immediately. Desai had been in the role for less than a year. The company’s board named Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO. Ittycheria previously led MongoDB for over a decade and remains a board member.

Desai will join Meta Platforms to lead its new Meta Enterprise Platform as chief enterprise platform officer. This platform aims to help businesses use artificial intelligence tools to grow and innovate. Desai will report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

MongoDB said the leadership change was not due to any disagreement with the company. The board has started searching for a permanent CEO and hired an executive search firm to assist with the process.

Despite the sudden change, MongoDB reaffirmed its financial outlook for the third quarter and full fiscal year 2027. The company expects third-quarter revenue between $756 million and $761 million and full-year revenue between $2.99 billion and $3.03 billion.

The news unsettled investors, with MongoDB shares dropping sharply—around 16.7% in premarket trading—following the announcement. The decline likely reflects concerns about the uncertainty during the CEO transition rather than the company’s fundamentals, which remain strong.

Ittycheria’s return is seen as a stabilising move. He led MongoDB from 2014 to 2025, growing it from a small startup into a major player in database software. He has stayed involved as a board member and advisor since stepping down, so he knows the company well.

MongoDB’s investor day is scheduled for September 29, one day after the leadership change. The company plans to share more details about its strategy and product innovation, especially related to AI-powered data platforms.
