Premier League rivals demand swift punishment for Manchester City

Manchester City has been found guilty of serious financial rule breaches by an independent Premier League commission. The club was judged to have used fake sponsorship deals and other tricks to hide more than £900 million in secret funding between 2009 and 2018. This misconduct helped them stay within spending limits while actually overspending by a large margin.
The Premier League’s independent commission said City broke the rules over nearly a decade and failed to properly cooperate with the investigation. The club denies any wrongdoing and says it will appeal the decision by early October. The final punishment has not yet been decided.
Other Premier League clubs want the case to be wrapped up before the end of this season. They fear dragging it out will cause uncertainty and harm the competition’s fairness, especially if City keeps winning titles while under investigation. Many feel a punishment short of a long-term relegation would be too light given the scale of the breaches.
The Premier League board has said it wants the process, including any appeals, finished quickly. But the club’s appeal and the sanction hearing could take months, and City may try to delay the process by challenging the new faster timelines introduced this season.
Meanwhile, City’s main sponsor, Etihad Airways, has rejected any suggestion it was involved in improper deals. It criticises the Premier League for how it shared information publicly and says it is seeking legal advice to protect its interests.
Several rival clubs are also exploring legal action to claim compensation, arguing City’s cheating affected their own chances in the league and European competitions. This could add another layer of complexity to a case that has already taken years to reach this stage.
For now, the football world awaits the final decisions on sanctions and appeals, hoping the saga will end soon to preserve the integrity of the Premier League.
