Oura’s Smart Ring IPO Draws Big Interest but Comes with Warnings

Oura, known for its smart health-tracking ring, is making a big splash as it prepares to go public. The company plans to offer 50 million shares priced between $40 and $44 each. But most of these shares are being sold by current investors, not the company itself, which means Oura won’t get much new cash from this sale.

The IPO has attracted strong demand, with reports showing investors want about four times more shares than are available. This interest could push Oura’s stock price up when trading starts. Still, experts advise potential buyers to understand the risks before investing.

Oura’s ring tracks sleep, activity, stress, and other health data, helping users get a clearer picture of their wellbeing. It’s popular, with 5 million paid members worldwide, doubling from the previous year. Most of the company’s revenue comes from selling the rings, with the rest from monthly membership subscriptions.

However, the company faces challenges. It carries significant debt and will use nearly all the money it raises from selling new shares to cover employee tax costs related to stock awards, not to grow the business. Also, Oura is involved in a legal dispute with Samsung over patents, which could be costly and uncertain.

Another concern is that Oura’s health features are not approved medical devices, but fall under wellness products, a category with shifting rules. There’s even a lawsuit questioning the accuracy of its sleep tracking.

So, while the IPO looks exciting because of strong demand and rapid growth, investors should weigh these warning signs carefully. The offering mainly benefits early investors looking to cash out, and Oura still faces hurdles in a competitive and changing market.
