Mosimane Shares Insights on Key Substitutions in Bafana’s Win Over Guinea

South Africa’s national football coach, Pitso Mosimane, opened up about his substitution choices after Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 victory over Guinea in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Orlando Stadium.

The game saw a late change that proved crucial. Yanela Mbuthuma came on for Iqraam Rayners in the 68th minute and provided the assist for Samukele Kabini’s winning goal just nine minutes later. Kabini had earlier replaced Aubrey Modiba, who went off with a hamstring injury.

Mosimane explained that before making the switch, he consulted not only with the senior player Themba Zwane but also with Lebone Seema, Mbuthuma’s club teammate. He stressed Zwane’s importance to the team, despite his age and the fact he didn’t play in the match.

“He knows the team well, he knows the players well,” Mosimane said, highlighting that Zwane’s role goes beyond just playing on the pitch.

The coach also noted the need for a conventional striker in the game. While Cassius Mailula is a smart player, Mosimane wanted a ‘number 9’ type who could offer a strong physical presence, especially during set pieces. Mbuthuma fit that role.

Although Rayners didn’t score, Mosimane praised his hard work and pressing during the game. “Sometimes Iqraam can take you out with one ball,” the coach said, noting that the striker’s effort helped the team even if the goals didn’t come.

This win puts South Africa at the top of Group D as they prepare to face Eritrea next in a neutral venue in Cairo. The victory was a solid start for Mosimane’s current spell as head coach, showing the impact of his tactical decisions and the leadership within the squad.
