Suspected Cato Manor Serial Rapist Faces 27 Charges, Bail Abandoned

A 46-year-old man suspected of a series of rapes in Cato Manor appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court recently. The court heard that the number of charges against him has increased to 27. These now include kidnapping, housebreaking with the intent to rape, theft, and assault causing grievous bodily harm.
The accused has chosen to abandon his bail application, so he will remain in custody while the case continues. The next court date is set for 28 October 2026, when the Director of Public Prosecutions will review the case and decide how to proceed.
Police arrested the man on 17 September 2026 after a lengthy investigation by specialised units focused on serial and electronic crime, as well as investigative psychology. DNA evidence linked him to 14 rapes in Cato Manor between 2014 and 2025, with additional alleged attacks in nearby areas such as Plessislaer and Taylor’s Halt.
Authorities say the suspect targeted women leaving taverns, following them home at night. He allegedly used pantyhose over his face to hide his identity during the assaults, which made it difficult for victims to identify him. This method was part of a pattern that helped police connect the cases.
The KwaZulu-Natal government has welcomed the arrest and praised the police for their evidence-based approach to tackling gender-based violence. Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli attended one of the court hearings and emphasised the importance of professional policing and community support in fighting such crimes.
The accused’s identity remains protected by a court order to safeguard the alleged victims. It’s important to note that the man has not been convicted, and all charges are still subject to the court’s judgment.
