How Aaron Ramsdale Went From Premier League Star to Southampton’s Fourth-Choice Keeper

Aaron Ramsdale’s football career has taken a surprising turn. Just a few years ago, he was a key goalkeeper for Arsenal, playing regularly in the Premier League and earning caps for England. Now, at 28, he hasn’t played a competitive match in five months and is Southampton’s fourth-choice goalkeeper.
Ramsdale joined Southampton in August 2024 after a strong spell at Arsenal, where he made 89 appearances and was named in the Premier League’s team of the year for the 2022-23 season. He arrived at Southampton with high hopes, expected to help the newly promoted club stay in the top flight and fit well with the style of play favored by then-manager Russell Martin.
However, the 2024-25 season was tough. Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League, and Ramsdale was part of a defence that conceded more goals than any other team. While the team struggled overall, Ramsdale’s performances were mixed, and it was the fourth time he has experienced relegation in his career.
In August 2025, Ramsdale went on loan to Newcastle United, a club competing in the Champions League. He played regularly but faced stiff competition for the starting spot and had some difficult moments, including conceding seven goals in a Champions League match against Barcelona.
Back at Southampton, the club signed Daniel Peretz permanently in June 2026 after a successful loan spell. Peretz quickly became the clear first-choice goalkeeper. Alongside George Long and Gavin Bazunu, Peretz’s rise pushed Ramsdale down the pecking order. For the 2026-27 season, squad numbers show Peretz as number one and Ramsdale wearing number 32, often a sign of lower priority for goalkeepers.
Southampton’s current manager, Tonda Eckert, has made it clear Ramsdale is not in his immediate plans, with Peretz, Long, and Jamie Jones ahead. Despite this, Ramsdale remains professional and is reportedly determined to fight for his place, hoping to get back into the team or find a new opportunity in the upcoming January transfer window.
Ramsdale’s story is a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football. From being celebrated at Arsenal and on the international stage, he now faces the challenge of regaining his top-level career momentum while supporting his family settled near Southampton.
