Google Tests Paying Publishers for Content Used in AI Search Results

Google has started a trial where it pays some websites when their content helps power its new AI search features. About 100 publishers have joined this pilot program, which is still in its early stages.

These payments come from how much a publisher’s articles or pages contribute to AI-generated answers in Google’s search tools, including features called AI Overviews, AI Mode, and the Gemini chatbot. Publishers who take part can see their earnings in a special panel inside Google’s Search Console, though Google hasn’t explained exactly how it calculates these payments.

Some publishers in the program have made significant money. One early participant reportedly earned over a million dollars in a year, while another more recent addition earned about $50,000 to $60,000. But many smaller or newer publishers say the payments are very small, often far less than what they earn from ads. Some have even declined to join because the amounts don’t seem worthwhile.

This pilot comes as Google faces criticism and legal challenges from publishers worried that AI search features reduce traffic to their websites. In fact, regulators in the UK have ordered Google to give publishers the option to opt out of having their content used in AI search answers. Google itself has introduced tools letting site owners control whether their content appears in these AI features, without affecting their regular search rankings.

Google says the pilot is a way to find better ways to reward publishers for their content as AI changes how people search online. But details remain unclear, and many publishers want more transparency on how payments are decided. Still, some see being part of the program as better than being left out, hoping it might lead to fairer deals in the future.
