Microsoft says ‘people matter more than AI’ following safety concerns

Microsoft says ‘people matter more than AI’ following safety concerns. Microsoft is publishing a 37-page "humanist AI code of conduct" today, amid growing safety concerns over AI model progress. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a coordinated slow down of AI development over the weekend, after researchers warned recently that AI model progress could outpace our ability to safely deploy increasingly complex systems and verify […]

Still, the result is a comprehensive guide as to how Microsoft approaches AI safety and how those ideas are implemented in practice.
“We must therefore be completely clear about why we are inventing these systems and how we intend to control them. ” The code of conduct also lays out general principles that Microsoft AI models should uphold — supporting humans rather than replacing them, for instance, and accelerating human flourishing — as well as specific safety constraints meant to implement those principles. Ahead of an expected public-market debut later this year, Agility Robotics says it has cracked the code and devised humanoids that can work safely alongside real humans. Those concerns triggered a selloff in tech firms' shares as investors weighed the impact of a potential slowdown in the multi-billion dollar development of AI.
UK Business Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, said on Tuesday that people should "never be complacent" about the impact AI might have but added: "We've got to be careful not to get hyperbolic about this either. "Figure caption, AI "more powerful by the day", Anthropic co-founder tells BBCA growing number of tech industry and political figures are calling for better safeguards, most recently Microsoft AI which this week discussed limiting the models it is developing in a document on what it called "humanist AI".
Microsoft AI's chief executive Mustafa Suleyman told business news channel CNBC that it had been working on the new guidance for months and had decided to publish it now due to the current debate around the technology. In an indication of how concerns over the technology have been thrust into the spotlight, two high-profile figures on opposite sides of US politics are set to appear at the same event calling for a re-evaluation of AI policy.
The debate over the potential dangers posed by the technology intensified in recent days after a post by Jacob Coxon, a researcher who left Anthropic over concerns AI could wipe out humanity, went viral.

The document is more low level than Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s recent call for pacing the frontier, instead focusing on the values and red lines that guide model training within Microsoft AI.
Under Microsoft’s system, each model has an overarching code of conduct that overrides the preferences of individual users or any specific tasks. “MAI Models will not use adaptive, deceptive, self-reinforcing, collusion, or other mechanisms to evade or defeat human oversight so that they can no longer be reliably directed, modified, or shut down by authorized people or systems,” the document reads. The release comes amid an unprecedented focus on AI safety, driven by a string of rogue-agent incidents, as well as the abrupt resignation of an Anthropic employee, who cited the growing risk that AI would cause human extinction.
Together with Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, Microsoft has broadly embraced a general approach of pacing the frontier, with particular support for embedded evaluators in AI labs. “We welcome the research, focus, and deliberate pacing needed to get alignment right as the design goal,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote online.
