Kimi Antonelli Dominates United States Grand Prix, Edging Closer to Formula 1 Title

Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance at the 2026 United States Grand Prix held at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin on October 25, securing his ninth victory of the season. Starting from pole position, the young Mercedes driver controlled the race from start to finish, crossing the line 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completing the podium in third place.
Antonelli’s win was underpinned by a strategic masterstroke from Mercedes, who committed to a one-stop tyre strategy. While rival teams such as Ferrari and Red Bull opted for two stops, Mercedes extended Antonelli’s first stint on medium tyres before switching to hard tyres. This approach allowed him to build and maintain a substantial lead throughout the 56-lap race, effectively managing tyre degradation and race pace.
Leclerc and Verstappen engaged in intense battles behind Antonelli, with Leclerc ultimately securing second place and Verstappen finishing third. Mercedes teammate George Russell faced a challenging race, receiving a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits and gaining an advantage early on. Russell struggled to overtake McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and finished in eighth position. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, secured fourth place, keeping the championship contest mathematically alive ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.
With this victory, Antonelli’s points total rose to 365, extending his lead over Russell to 123 points. According to official Formula 1 calculations, Antonelli can clinch the Drivers’ World Championship at the next race in Mexico City if he does not lose more than 23 points to Russell or 24 points to Hamilton. While the title is tantalisingly close, it remains undecided, with the Mexican Grand Prix set to be a critical moment in the championship battle.
Antonelli acknowledged the pressure he felt throughout the race, emphasising the importance of staying calm and focused to avoid costly mistakes. “It was the result we needed,” he said, praising his team’s flawless execution of the one-stop strategy and the collective effort behind the new car package. “The whole team deserves it so much, and all the work put into bringing this new package finally paid off. It was a great team effort.”
The race featured notable incidents further down the field, including contact between Alexander Albon and Fernando Alonso, and a penalty for Haas driver Oliver Bearman before his retirement. George Russell’s penalty and subsequent difficulties highlighted the challenges Mercedes faced with car balance and overtaking during the event.
Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff described Antonelli’s drive as “exceptional,” praising the team’s resilience after a difficult start to the weekend. “We didn’t look like we had a car capable of winning after Friday, but the team kept working, made good decisions, and turned the weekend around,” Wolff said. He acknowledged Russell’s struggles and promised the team would work to improve performance ahead of Mexico.
Antonelli’s pole position was secured on October 24 with a lap time of 1:34.035, beating Verstappen by 0.179 seconds. This strong qualifying performance set the tone for his dominant race day, where he led from the start and never relinquished control.
As the season approaches its climax, Antonelli’s performance in Austin has positioned him as a strong favourite to become the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history, provided he meets the points requirements at the Mexican Grand Prix. Fans and teams alike will be eagerly anticipating the next round as the 2026 season reaches a thrilling conclusion.
