Family Mourns as 38-Year-Old Dineo Motapane Is Laid to Rest After KwaThema Murder

The family of Dineo Motapane is struggling to come to terms with her tragic death. The 38-year-old woman’s body was found on the side of a road in KwaThema, Springs, east of Johannesburg on 15 September. Her relatives identified her at the Springs Mortuary the following day.
Dineo was last seen alive on Sunday, 13 September, but her disappearance was not reported before her body was discovered. The discovery shocked her family and community, who described the loss as deeply painful.
Her funeral took place in KwaThema, where she was laid to rest alongside her uncle, who had passed away before her body was found. Family members, including her aunt Martha Goge, expressed their grief and said the family is finding it hard to accept what happened. They appealed to those responsible to seek forgiveness.
Dineo left behind a two-year-old daughter, adding to the heartbreak felt by those who knew her. At a memorial service in KwaThema, her family called on anyone with information to come forward. They also welcomed the involvement of senior police officers brought in to assist with the investigation.
The South African government’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide has listed Dineo as the eighth woman found in a series of murders in the Ekurhuleni area. A specialized police team is now leading the investigation, with a dedicated contact number and Crime Stop line set up for the public to share tips.
Authorities have cautioned the public not to assume all the cases are connected, as investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, police have offered a R400,000 reward for information that could help solve these murders and bring those responsible to justice.
The community is urged to support the police by providing any relevant information and by remaining vigilant. The tragedy has highlighted the ongoing challenges South Africa faces around the safety of women and the urgent need for justice and prevention.
