But as the global series expanded to 10 teams and seven races in 2025, its own emissions rose from 1,672 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in its first season to 4,049 tonnes in its second, according to E1's own annual sustainability report. "There is an acknowledgement within E1 that the work is unfinished and that more active reductions are needed. "It takes a lot more than just having the fastest car to win a Cup Series race," said Larson, acknowledging Joey Logano had the best car. "The second race in NASCAR's new postseason Chase format gave significant boosts to the championship hopes for Larson and Joey Logano, a three-time Cup Series champion who finished third and added 19 stage points. Yohei Ikeda of Japan came third, while Marc Scott – who won the race in 2021 – was the first British athlete to finish in eighth place.

The wider picture

There was an errorCaptain Joe Root and Jordan Cox helped England fight back from an early scare as the hosts recovered from 2-2, to successfully chase down 130 and wrap up an eight-wicket win and a 3-0 series clean sweep against Pakistan at Edgbaston. Future series will no longer be broadcast on BBC Three as the show moves to a streaming platform owned by its production company. "James, like fellow sport stars Rafa Nadal, Tom Brady, Didier Drogba and Virat Kohli and actor Will Smith, is an E1 team owner after buying into the series.

Journalist Omar Prata, covering the race for the Jornal de Angola, admitted that E1 was not on his radar until Hollywood star Smith, whose Westbrook Racing team is sponsored by Visit Angola, announced in March that a deal had been agreed to race in Luanda for the next three years. "Boosting Angola long-termImage source, Getty ImagesImage caption, Luanda was the fifth stop on the E1 calendar this year after races in Jeddah, Lake Como, Dubrovnik and MonacoThe star power of E1's owners is helping to bring eyeballs to what is a traditionally niche sport where powerboat pilots skim and bounce around tight courses at speeds close to 100kmph.

"The aspiration is that hosting an E1 race will help Angola boost visitor numbers, with minister for tourism Marcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel saying enhanced foreign awareness of the country is the "first step" in a long-term plan. Daniel said it would be "premature" to assess the economic impact of this weekend's race in Luanda. Sustainability has been one cornerstone, and marine conservation efforts around the race in Angola included mangrove restoration.

Putting sustainability front and centre inevitably invites scrutiny – particularly when races have taken place in Saudi Arabia, the United States, Nigeria and now Angola, all major oil-producing nations. "Copas told BBC Sport Africa that E1 would only consider air freight as a last resort for transporting its teams and that they aim to showcase their technology on each stop, persuading people that electric charging is a viable alternative to diesel even on water. "It would be crazy for us to say we're not going to travel and we're not going to race, because then we can't do the job that we're here to do.

Larson, the defending series champion, took his No. The track formerly known as Gateway was the only regular stop on the series where Hendrick hadn't won. "When you have an opportunity like that and you have a car like that, you need to win," said Logano, who won the pole and led a race-high 96 laps, 16 more than Larson. What was supposed to be a 240-lap race in suburban St.

What happens next

After several Chase contenders were involved in late crashes, the race was red-flagged with 11 laps to go, just after Larson swiped the lead from Logano, and again with two left in regulation. Denny Hamlin, the defending race champion, placed ninth to maintain his points lead. Larson racked up 73 points in the race to jump from seventh to second in the Chase standings, nine behind Hamlin. Christopher Bell, the winner of last week's Southern 500, is another nine points back in third place after two of 10 postseason races.

"A series of final-stage crashes had significant Chase implications. 19 Toyota going into Turn 1, creating four-wide traffic on Gateway's tighter series of turns. Blaney, who was third in the Chase entering the race, had a catastrophic brake failure at the finish line on Lap 155 while he was running in sixth place.
