Chris Brown Avoids Jail with Suspended Sentence After London Nightclub Attack

Chris Brown, the American R&B singer, has received an eight-month prison sentence, but it has been suspended for 12 months. This means he will not go to prison now but must avoid further trouble during that period. The sentence comes after a violent incident at a London nightclub in early 2023.

It all started on the night of 19 February 2023 at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair, central London. CCTV footage shown in court revealed Brown swinging a heavy glass tequila bottle at a man named Abraham Diaw. He struck Diaw several times, hitting him twice on the head and once on the shoulder. The attack lasted about 20 seconds. Brown was also joined by his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who punched the victim and helped chase him through the club before Diaw was pushed to the floor and kicked.

Diaw was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with a head injury and a knee injury. An MRI scan later showed a serious ligament injury in his knee. Despite these injuries, the court heard there were no fractures or broken skin.

Brown and Akinlolu both pleaded guilty to affray, which is a public order offence involving the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes fear to others. Their guilty pleas were entered in July 2026, and they were sentenced on 26 October 2026 at Southwark Crown Court in London.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as “plainly dangerous,” especially because Brown used a glass bottle aimed at the victim’s head. The judge warned that violence in crowded places like nightclubs creates risks not just for the victim but for others nearby. He also made it clear that Brown’s fame and success did not give him any special treatment under the law.

However, the judge took into account Brown’s guilty plea, his compliance with bail conditions, his role as a father to four children, and noted that Brown’s risk of reoffending was low. These factors led to the decision to suspend the prison sentence rather than send Brown immediately to jail.

Akinlolu was given a four-month prison sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.

After the incident, both Brown and Akinlolu left the UK. Brown was arrested in May 2025 when he returned to the country for a concert in Manchester as part of his world tour. The police described the investigation as lengthy and said they worked hard to bring the men to justice despite the time that had passed and their absence from the UK.

The Crown Prosecution Service called the attack “vicious and unprovoked,” highlighting how Brown used the bottle as a weapon in a crowded nightclub. The Metropolitan Police released CCTV footage following the sentencing to show the public what happened inside the club.

Brown’s defence described him as a dedicated father and a law-abiding person since his last conviction in 2013. His lawyer expressed regret about the incident and offered apologies to those present at the nightclub that night.

Brown left the court amid cheers from some supporters and later shared a video on social media showing a thumbs-up gesture from inside his car.
