Northampton Saints Aim to Defend Their Title as PREM Rugby Season Kicks Off

The new Gallagher PREM Rugby season begins this Friday, September 25, 2026, with excitement building around whether Northampton Saints can repeat as champions. They’re the defending titleholders after beating Exeter Chiefs in last year’s final at Twickenham.
Northampton had a strong 2025-26 season, topping the table and lifting the trophy. They’ve kept most of their key players, including Fin Smith, Tommy Freeman, Alex Mitchell, Alex Coles and Henry Pollock, who’s been in the headlines for his performances and new contract extension. The club’s young talent continues to grow under coaches Sam Vesty and Phil Dowson, who have helped maintain their attacking style known as the Saints Way.
Still, the challenge is tough. No team has successfully defended the PREM title since Saracens did it in 2019. Other clubs, like Bath and Saracens, are determined to challenge Northampton’s hold on the trophy. Bath finished second last season and have made some changes to their squad, aiming to bounce back after a disappointing semi-final loss. Saracens have a new director of rugby, Brendan Venter, and have brought in some notable signings, including Tomos Williams and George Martin, hoping to improve on recent seasons.
Leicester Tigers, Newcastle Red Bulls, Sale Sharks, Gloucester, Harlequins, and Exeter Chiefs also enter the season with hopes and fresh faces. Leicester, for example, added Wales international Aaron Wainwright and veteran prop Mako Vunipola, while Newcastle are working to turn things around following Red Bull’s investment.
This season will also be shaped by the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup, which means player management will be key for clubs with many international stars. Fans can look forward to a full schedule of matches, with Northampton’s first game at home against Newcastle Red Bulls and the season final set for June 19, 2027, at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.
