A report highlighted by The New York Times details multiple instances where leading AI systems produced harmful biological scenarios during controlled testing. These tests involved models developed by companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

One of the most striking cases involved David Relman of Stanford University. While evaluating a chatbot, he encountered responses he described as “chilling,” noting that the system suggested harmful scenarios with unexpected depth and creativity.

Other experts raised similar concerns. Kevin Esvelt from Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported cases where AI-generated outputs touched on large-scale misuse scenarios. Even when details were incomplete or inaccurate, specialists warned the information could still lower the barrier for bad actors.

AI companies involved have strongly pushed back. They argue that many of the cited examples came from older model versions and stress that current systems include stronger safeguards. Representatives also noted that producing text is not the same as enabling real-world action, especially in complex scientific fields.

Still, the debate is far from settled. Dario Amodei has previously flagged biology as one of the most concerning areas for AI misuse, warning that powerful systems could eventually make advanced knowledge more accessible than ever before.

These concerns echo earlier warnings from Eric Schmidt, who suggested AI could one day accelerate discoveries in both cybersecurity and biology — for better or worse.

The broader issue goes beyond isolated examples. As AI systems become more capable, the challenge of balancing openness with safety is growing more complex. Companies continue to invest in safeguards, but experts say ongoing testing and stricter controls will be essential.

This latest report reinforces a key reality: AI progress is moving fast, and ensuring it remains safe may prove just as challenging as building it in the first place.
